Combatting Zika in Brazil

UNICEF logo

We worked with UNICEF and Facebook to help Brazilians protect themselves and their loved ones from Zika. It was the first time Facebook data was used to shape a public health campaign. Much of the credit goes to the team at UNICEF Brazil, and we still count it among the best examples we have seen of social media data used to protect lives.

In 2015, the Zika virus began to spread widely through Latin America. By February 2016, UNICEF Brazil was moving quickly to build awareness and increase prevention.

Working with us and Facebook, UNICEF used insights from aggregated, anonymized Facebook data to find the people most actively spreading information about Zika. UNICEF then created content for them.
